Il Primitivo

The dark skinned Primitivo grape (‘Zinfandel’ in California), is a key grape of the region of Puglia. Puglia is in south eastern Italy with Manduria, near Taranto in the heel of Italy as the main centre. The vineyard works on biological lines, limiting the number of more traditional treatments against pests and diseases. Fermentation is carried out in stainless steel containers and maturing is also in steel for 8 months. This is followed by a short period in small oak barrels, barriques.

The result is a very approachable medium bodied inky, tannic wine with intense flavours and colours. The nose shows lovely hints of red-fleshed fruit and berries, with a slight reference to spices and subtle hints of prunes and violets. The colour is deep ruby red. On the palate, the wine has a good body and the smooth drying tannins mingle well with the round juicy fruit feel.

It combines well with red meats and mature cheeses.
